Department of Ecological Microbiology
My research focusses on microbial biofilm-like ecosystems in terrestrial surface and subsurface environments. Specifically, I am looking at chemolithoautotrophic metabolisms and stress tolerance mechanisms in environmentally relevant, yet uncultured microorganisms. Currently I am exploring the role of manganese as a potential energy source in subsurface biofilms and as a key element in desiccation tolerance of surface soil microorganisms. My methods comprise meta-genomic/-transcriptomic/(-proteomic) analyses, fluorescence microscopy techniques, mesocosm and enrichment culture experiments.
