Abstract:
Lichens are stable symbiotic associations between a mycobiont (fungus) and a photobiont (an alga or cyanobacterium), which form a lichen thallus that may contain characteristic secondary metabolites. In this symbiosis, lichens can inhabit sites, which neither partner could colonize alone. The majority of lichen algae belong to the green algae, most lichen fungi belong to the Pezizomycotina. The compatible associations between lichen algae and lichen fungi and their evolution are discussed. A selective interaction between these partners can be assumed, since only a limited number of compatible interrelations are found in nature.
